Sweden: For and Against Partnership Law

At its Annual General Meeting held in April, the Swedish Humanist Association made an official statement supporting the right of lesbians and gays to registered partnership. The statement criticised the Christian campaign against ‘Partnership Law’, which took effect in January 1995, as “an obvious example of how morally wrong you can get if you allow yourself to be guided by ancient biblical superstition on issues of our own time”. However, a survey carried out by the Swedish national lesbian and gay organisation RFSL has revealed that 25% of the officials licensed to perform partnership ceremonies refuse to do so. Not surprisingly, most of this sort of discrimination is to found in the southern ‘bible-belt’ province of Smaaland.
